mini-essay on Antarctica published in Sierra

A few years ago I was lucky enough to explore the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica with a team of research scientists. I went in as an aspiring scientist myself, but emerged an aspiring writer...no equation or theory or empirical summary of any sort could adequately evoke or describe that place, only poetry would do. Or failing that, prose! Sierra Magazine just published a short essay about my experience -- you can read it in the July/August 2013 issue, available on newsstands now or online here.

A rather solemn self-portrait in Antarctica. I had fun there, really!
